Objective

  • Bead preparation with 10% clay
  • Using solid clay
  • repeat procedure using 3% bentonite solution
  • Crosslink films from last Friday
  • MG calibration curve
  • Repeat the preparation of film containing clay, but use 3 wt% solution to replace some of the water.

Description

  • Bead Preparation
  • First used this procedure scaled to 4.5g
  • Then usedthis procedure using solid clay
  • Then used same procedure using 3% bentonite solution
  • Film Crosslinking
  • Crosslinked the three films from last time using the protocol [here]
  • MG calibration curve
  • Using 200ppm solution, six solutions were created.
  • First, a 10ppm solution was created using 0.5 mL of 200ppm Malachite Green solutions and 9.5mL of H2O
  • From the 10ppm solutions, the rest of the dilutions were created using the following volumes
Dilution Volumes
Dilution Concentration Volume of 10ppm Malachite Green (mL) Volume of water (mL)
8ppm 8 2
6ppm 6 4
4ppm 4 6
2ppm 2 8
1ppm 1 9
  • PVOH film prepared using 3% bentonite solution
  • 1g PVOH
  • 3.33mL of bentonite solution
  • To make up for the water in solution 8.67 mL of water was added to the film
0.1 g bentonite * 100 mL solution/3 g bentonite = 3.33 mL bentonite solution
12 mL - 3.33 mL bentonite solution = 8.67 mL water

Notes

Bead preparation done using the first procedure (this) didn't work. Everything congealed into single masses. Small beads did not form. It is likely because this procedure adds the gultaraldehyde to the ethyl acetate before adding the solution dropwise.

The second procedure works well, but it works better with the 3% bentonite solution as opposed to the solid clay. The beads made using solid clay are a little larger than the ones made with the solution.

The film with glyoxyl dissolved a little in the HCl during the crosslinking process showing that it is not a suitable film. The other two films did not dissolve at all.
