Remains of the Day

  • Steph extracted the fragments I cut out yesterday and is now ligating them to PCR cloning plasmid for sitting over the weekend.
  • I finished image processing for the second trial of elderberries. Jonathan is doing the same for the Ilex holly.
  • Interesting blurb on tomato yields in Ontario in 2011 and 2012: Canada: Record yield for Ontario tomato growers

Ontario tomato growers have squashed all previous records for average processing tomato yields, with more than 44 tons per acre this fall.

"It was a good year," Al Krueger, executive assistant of the Ontario Processing Vegetable Growers, said Monday.

The previous record for average yield per acre was 41.1 tons set in 2009 and 2006.

Krueger said all the numbers aren't in yet, but it looks like the record average yield this year could be around 44.3 tons per acre.

It's well above last year's dismal 36.6 tons per acre average.

Krueger said growers who rely on irrigation can handle a hot, dry year better than last year's wet season, which can bring disease. One canner may still be operating, but for most of the processors the season ended in early October, he said.

The Ontario processing tomato crop, which is grown mostly in Essex County and Chatham-Kent, is worth $55 million to $60 million a year. There are 12,500 acres of processing tomatoes, which produced more than 550,000 tons of tomatoes this year.

Heinz Canada reported a record 47 tons per acre. The Leamington plant processed about 232,000 tons of tomatoes this year, which was about three per cent above what was expected.

The season for Heinz started Aug. 14 and ended Sept. 30.
