Today we observed samples of organisms from the Volvocine Line. This included Chlamydomonas, Gonium, and Volvox. These organisms were observed to prepare us for the types of organisms we will find in our transect. We observed transect 2, an environment located on the campus of Wesley Theological Seminary. By studying a transect, our objective is to be able to make observations about the characteristics of our environmental niche so that we can later determine what types of organisms inhabit the area.

An 11.6 g sample was taken at the site of the transect. The sample included soil, pine needles, a small sample from ferns and ivies growing in the area on the ground and on the trunk of a tree. Later, Hay Infusion Culture was made with the 11.6g g soil sample, 0.1 g of dried milk, and 500 mL of filtered, Deer Park water. The sample was mixed and left on a lab bench in an open jar to further mix and separate until samples could be taken from the culture at a later date.

Introduction and Objectives

Today we observed samples of organisms from the Volvocine Line. This included Chlamydomonas, Gonium, and Volvox. These organisms were observed to prepare us for the types of organisms we will find in our transect. We observed transect 2, an environment located on the campus of Wesley Theological Seminary. By studying a transect, our objective is to be able to make observations about the characteristics of our environmental niche so that we can later determine what types of organisms inhabit the area.

The transect is a wooded area outside the campus of American University. It is approximately 25x25 feet in size. Below is a list of both abiotic and biotic characteristics of the area.

Biotic (living): 3 coniferous trees and 3 deciduous trees. Ground cover includes grass, pine needles, ferns, ivies, and weeds. Animals include gnats and mosquitos.

Abiotic (not living): there are no abiotic characteristics in this transect.
