They cannot grow anaerobically, i.e. ferment glycerol, like they can with glucose due to the balance of NADH for glycolysis/fermentation. Thus I do not think glycerol is a great choice.

  • Austin Che 19:29, 13 June 2007 (EDT): I must have completely missed these discussions whenever they happened but glycerol isn't really that great a choice as E. coli require oxygen to grow in glycerol. They cannot grow anaerobically, i.e. ferment glycerol, like they can with glucose due to the balance of NADH for glycolysis/fermentation. Thus I do not think glycerol is a great choice.
