The NanoThermal Bioengineering Laboratory (NT-BEL) focuses on fundamental understanding of the bio-nano interface and translating this to biomedical applications. Current efforts focus on the thermo-plasmonic fundamentals and its effects at the interface between biological systems and nanomaterials. Specifically, experimental techniques and methods will be developed to understand the effects of nanoparticle plasmonic heating on proteins and other biomolecules immediately surrounding the nanoparticle. This leads to new enabling tools for fundamental research, and to applications in both diagnostic and therapeutic areas.


Research in biology and medicine has led to significant advances in healthcare in the last century. However, we are still facing tremendous challenges in offering effective diagnostic and therapeutic solutions, ranging from tropical infectious diseases (e.g. malaria) to aging-associated diseases (e.g. cancer, neurological disorders). While this requires the collaborative efforts from different expertise including but not limited to biology, medicine, technology and business, engineers can make a unique contribution by developing enabling technologies to help address these global problems.
We are always looking for highly motivated individuals to join our laboratory. With the interdisciplinary nature of the work, candidates with different backgrounds (engineering, biology, chemistry etc) are welcome to apply.


Housed in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Texas at Dallas, our laboratory is devoted to:

* 10/30/2014 NT-BEL is actively looking a post-doctoral researcher with experience in nanomaterials (synthesis, bioconjugation and characterization), and its biomedical applications in drug delivery or cancer therapeutics. Interested candidates can send a cover letter, CV, top 3 publications and references to Dr. Qin (Zhenpeng.Qin@utdallas.edu).
* 08/20/2014 Our manuscript on protein denaturation, "Correlated Parameter Fit of Arrhenius Model for Thermal Denaturation of Proteins and Cells", has been accepted in [http://www.springer.com/biomed/journal/10439 Annals of Biomedical Engineering] and is available [http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10439-014-1100-y online].
