We are an interdisciplinary team at the [http://www.lbl.gov/ Berkeley Lab] studying signaling and stress response in both environmental and engineered organisms. We are part of the [http://enigma.lbl.gov/ ENIGMA] project where our research includes the study of two component signaling in the model sulfate reducing bacterium ''Desulfovibrio vulgaris'' Hildenborough. As part of the [http://jbei.org/index.html Joint BioEnergy Institute] we adopt targeted and systems biology approaches to elucidate causes of inhibition during fuel/ solvent production from lignocellulose using the host microbes such as ''Escherichia coli'' and ''Saccharomyces cerevisiae''. We hope to engineer better hosts for metabolite production and develop tools that are universally useful for microbial cellular engineering. Recently we have also become interested in studying signaling and response in cyanobacteria that dominate desert soil crusts.

We focus on engineering robust hosts for metabolite production, and we develop strategies that are universally useful, for microbial host engineering. We also engineer microbes towards catabolism of environmental pollutants,  where we address bioremediation of hydrocarbons, organophosphate and phosphonate compounds. We are part of the [http://enigma.lbl.gov/ ENIGMA] project where we take comprehensive systems biology approaches to examine bacterial signaling in ubiquitous and environmentally important, sulfate and metal reducing bacteria. We also study rainfall events and signaling in the fabulous cyanobacteria that dominate the desert soil crusts on our planet.
