Diagram indicating how membrane curvature mediates opening of the Msc (mechanosensitive channel) proteins in E. Coli. Osmotic pressure causes unequal forces on either side of membrane, which changes the structure of the phospholipid bilayer. The change in the bilayer changes the conformation of Msc, which signals to open the channel. Water and/or ions can then flow across the membrane to equalize osmotic pressure and prevent cell death.
