Work must be done to move a charge in an electric field, and the work is related to the potential difference between two points in an electric field. A surface on which all points are at the same potential is called an equipotential surface. Several electric charges in the same vicinity have an electric potential energy due to their mutual attraction or repulsion. Two equally and oppositely charged conductors, usually metal plates, which are near each other form a capacitor, in which electrical energy and charge can be stored.
