The centromere is the chromosomal location where the kinetochore assembles during mitosis and meiosis, allowing faithful chromosomal segregation between progeny. Most eukaryotic species have distinct centromeres (monocentromere), although several phylogenic branches have evolved holocentric chromosomes (the kinetocore assembles along the entire length of the chromosome). In monocentric species, the length and sequence of the centromeric DNA sequence are highly divergent. Our aim is to understand the evolution of the centromeric repeat sequence and holocentrisity can evolve.
