Plasmid stabilization
- Carbenicillin is used to select for cells bearing the beta-lactamase gene bla or ampR. Beta-lactamase also neutralizes ampicillin, but due to ampicillin's lower effectiveness, carbenicillin tends to give fewer satellite colonies and makes for more reliable cloning.
