Graduate Program at Purdue University

BIRS Information

The Biotechnology Innovation and Regulatory Science Graduate Program (BIRS) is offered in the U.S. and in Africa.

This Master's degree program consists of 10 courses (each 3 credit hours) and a special project (3 credit hours) for a total of 33 credit hours. There are four masters in Technology Leadership and Innovation (TLI) courses and six Biotechnology Innovation and Regulatory Science (BIRS) courses. The TLI core courses are designed to offer students an understanding of all aspects of Quality. The concentration courses contribute to the understanding of Biotechnology Innovation and Regulatory Science. The courses TLI 521, 522, and 524 provide in-depth content knowledge related to Biotechnology and Pharma. IT 535, MET 527, and OLS 579 courses are designed to provide students with knowledge to lead and manage operations associated with this industry.

In the U.S., the BIRS concentration courses are offered in a blended format. Typically the more basic information is presented online and advanced material and difficult concepts as well as group projects are presented on the weekends. The courses are presented on weekends (three weekends per semester) at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. Participants attend classes 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. Fridays, 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Saturdays and 7:30 a.m.- 4:00 pm Sundays. In this format a student takes two courses per semester and can complete the Master’s degree in two years.

In Africa, the BIRS courses are offered either in “live” format or “distance” format. The “live” courses are presented at Kilimanjaro School of Pharmacy, Moshi, Tanzania. Other than this difference, the curricula in the U.S. and Africa are identical.
