Welcome to HOKKAIDO-U MARIMOD page

What's "Marimo"?

Marimo is a Japanese name of Aegagropila linnaei. It is known as the "Lake Ball" or "Moss Balls" in English.
In Japanese, Marimo literally means "ball of seaweed". Although some Marimos live as filaments attached to rocks,
Marimos that live in Lake Akan, Hokkaido are round due to the various environmental factors and conditions.
