LAB 1 WRITE-UPIndependent and Dependent VariablesThe independent variable of this experiment is the 10mg pill of lipopolysaccharide which has been shown to increase protein levels. The dependent variable of this experiment is the newly discovered inflammatory protein Inflammotin. Experimental DesignGroups 11 Groups. 10 Subjects per group. 110 Subjects in total. 1 Control Group (C), in which control subjects will be given a sugar pill placebo. Dosage for each consecutive test group (1-10) increases by one pill - 10mg of lipopolysaccharide - for each subject in that respective group. It was decided that there should be 10 experimental groups in order to have a larger pool or results.
The Specific Conditions for Ineligibility are as Follows: - Any life threatening illness or condition such as: Heart disease Liver and Kidney problems Cancer Any Auto Immune disease And other life-threatening conditions that may put subjects at risk. - If they already take an agent that causes inflammation, as this would skew the results of the trial. - Already have significant inflammation Age and Gender Anyone aged 65 to 85 is of base eligibility to participate. Of course, they must pass the screening process in order to be considered fully eligible. Consideration will be given to gender, but if the pool of subjects that is compiled is too gender polarized, the experiment will be conducted regardless. Ideally, the experiment would be conducted with an equal number of male and female subjects; 5 male annd 5 female subjects per group. Number of subjects per group 10 subjects per group. Ideally, groups should be made up of an equal number of male and female subjects. If an equal number cannot be compiled, the experiment will be conducted on the groups regardless on the gender ratio of the subject pool.
Subject SelectionWe will put ads in newspapers and target retirement homes. Once they have shown interest in participating in the experiment, they would be briefed entirely of the experiment, given a consent form which will be signed by the subject and notarized. After the introduction process, the subjects will then go through a specific screening test that tests for preexisting conditions that would render them ineligible for the experiment.
Sources of Error and BiasAlthough there will be many tests to check the health of the subjects, there will still be a large difference between health conditions of each subject. It would also be very difficult to keep age differences as close as possible when moving from group to group. Also, the objective is to have a gender balanced experiment, but many factors can cause there to be an unbalanced number of females and males and can cause the experiment to become gender biased. Different races and ethnic groups can also add a ntother variable that could possibly skew the result.
