LAB 1 WRITE-UP

Independent and Dependent Variables

The independent variable is the LPS because it is the agent being used to change something.

The dependent variable is the Inflammotin because this is what is being measured to see if LPS is effective.

Experimental Design

Groups
We will have 22 groups, which will have 10 subjects per group. In each group there will be a defined age range and dosage of LPS given. In groups 1 through 11, the subjects will be age 60 to 69 years old. In groups 12 through 22, the subjects will be age 70 to 79 years old. Regarding the amount of LPS administered, group 1 and 12 will be given a placebo, group 2 and 13 will be given 1 mg of LPS, group 3 and 14 will be given 2 mg of LPS, and so on until groups 11 and 22 are given 10 mg of LPS.

Age
Groups 1-11 will have subjects that are 60 years old to 69 years old. Groups 12-22 will have subjects that are 70 years old to 79 years old.


Number of subjects per group

There should be 10 subjects in each group.




Subject Selection

Include: Different races, different social classes, different genders, different regions, and subjects must be under 200 lbs.

Exclude: The terminally ill or those with major diseases.





Sources of Error and Bias

Sources: Groups are not randomized correctly, the reliability of the subjects taking the medication, the possibility of outside factors affecting medications (e.g. foods, drinks), and conflict with other medications.

Solutions: A questionnaire for before and after, a brief pamphlet describing the medication and its interactions with other types of medications, and a check-in once a week to see progress and to determine if the schedule is being followed.
