LAB 1 WRITE-UP

Independent and Dependent Variables

The Independent Variable is the dosage of the Anti-inflammatory, Lipopolysaccharide, because that is the medication provided, which is controlled by the experimenter. The Dependent Variable is the inflammatory protein, Inflammotin, levels in the elderly because the levels are dependent on the amount of Lipopolysaccharide administered to the patients.

Experimental Design

Groups
Four groups of ten elderly people each will be created, with the participants randomly assigned into one of the groups. One group will be the control group, where no dosage of the drug will be administered, but rather a placebo. The following three groups will be given dosages of five, eight, or ten milligrams, respectively. The drug will be taken three times over the course of the trial, with a blood test before and after each administration. The Inflammotin levels over the course of the trial will be analyzed and compared to the rest of the data.

Age
All of the test subjects will be between the ages of 65-85 in order to have a normalized elderly sample. Subjects outside this range are outliers to the elderly population and therefore will be considered confounds if included in this study.

Number of subjects per group
Ten people between the ages of 65-85 will be analyzed in each of the four groups in order to provide a proper amount of data for significant testing.
