The Atkin lab is in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. We study gene regulatory mechanisms in two fungal model organisms, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida albicans with the goal of understanding how cell and developmental biology is regulated. Using a combination of molecular genetic and systems biology approaches, we investigate the regulation of wild-type gene expression by the nonsense-mediated mRNA decay pathway, and the regulation of morphogenesis of Candida albicans by quorum sensing.
Dr. Atkin is a mentor in the REU Site: Integrated Development of Bioenergy Systems Summer Research Program at UNL. This program offers qualified undergraduate students the chance to work with faculty whose expertise is closely related to the students' academic interests and career goals. This intensive summer research experience previews graduate school life while also providing many benefits including travel, stipend and living expenses.
