Master offer under the Molecular Biotechnology Program of the UB 2016/17

Polyamines for human health and plant stress protection

Our research group is initiating a novel line of research focused on the manipulation of polyamine levels in plants through the engineering of soil microbes. Polyamines are essential molecules for life and they are distributed in all Kingdoms. In plants, polyamines protect from stress and have beneficial effects on human health. Spermidine, one of such polyamines, has recently been associated with anti-aging effects in animals. Thus, the production of food enriched in certain polyamines is beneficial at industrial and consumer's levels.

In this Master, we propose to isolate and identify root-associated microbiota, analyze polyamine levels of isolated strains and engineer/perform laboratory-based microbial mixtures suitable for the production of stress-protective or anti-aging polyamines that can be taken up by plants, and then by humans through the diet. The use of different molecular and genetic approaches is expected to be required in this Master project.

Fluent English and good theoretical or practical background in molecular biology are required.
