Plant-Environment Interactions

We're interested in genetics of natural variation, population genetics and molecular biology. We want to know how climate change is shaping plant's resistance and tolerance traits under a combined multidisciplinary approach. Our lab undertakes a research approach that looks for the genetic and molecular basis of naturally occurring quantitative variation in biotic and abiotic stress responses, and how these interact with the environment (genotype-by-environment interactions). This multidisciplinary approach will allow a better understanding of the natural evolution of stress pathways in plants and efficient know-how transfer to practical applications.

The Arabidopsis thaliana green revolution

Barboza L, Effgen S, Alonso-Blanco C, Kooke R, Keurentjes J, Koornneef M and Alcázar R.
Arabidopsis semi-dwarfs evolved from independent mutations in GA20ox1, orthologue to 
green revolution dwarf alleles in rice and barley. PNAS, in press.

This article by Barboza et al. determines the evolutionary basis of the GA5 locus,
encoding one of the last enzymes of the gibberellic acid biosynthesis pathway, and
involved in semi-dwarf phenotypes that naturally segregate in A.thaliana populations.
Interestingly, the same locus has been targeted by crop breeding for the isolation
of the so-called green revolution alleles in rice and barley.

This study demonstrates that the use of A.thaliana natural variation enables
the identification of genes and alleles which can be successful for plant breeding.
